The test
ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَ ٱلۡمَوۡتَ وَٱلۡحَيَوٰةَ لِيَبۡلُوَكُمۡ أَيُّكُمۡ أَحۡسَنُ عَمَلٗاۚ وَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلۡغَفُورُ他曾创造了死生，以便他考验你们谁的作为是最优美的。他是万能的，是至赦的。
وَلَنَبۡلُوَنَّكُم بِشَيۡءٖ مِّنَ ٱلۡخَوۡفِ وَٱلۡجُوعِ وَنَقۡصٖ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَمۡوَٰلِ وَٱلۡأَنفُسِ وَٱلثَّمَرَٰتِۗ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلصَّٰبِرِينَ ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَآ أَصَٰبَتۡهُم مُّصِيبَةٞ قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّآ إِلَيۡهِ رَٰجِعُونَ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ صَلَوَٰتٞ مِّن رَّبِّهِمۡ وَرَحۡمَةٞۖ وَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُهۡتَدُونَ我必以些微的恐惧和饥馑，以及资产、生命、收获等的损失，试验你们，你当向坚忍的人报喜。 他们遭难的时候，说：“我们确是安拉所有的，我们必定只归依他。” 这等人，是蒙他们的养主的赞美和慈恩的；这等人，确是遵循正道的。
Justice and mercy
Much evil results from human choices, and natural calamities are a test and a mercy through the patience, solidarity and repentance they bring, and the believer is rewarded for what befalls him. Belief in the Hereafter is essential to understanding the question: Allah’s perfect justice is realised there.

Is suffering a punishment from Allah?
Not necessarily; it may be a test, a raising of rank or an expiation, and no one should judge another as being punished.
