Why does God allow evil and suffering?

Short answerIslam teaches that this world is a place of testing, not of final recompense: Allah created death and life to test people, and suffering carries wisdom we may or may not see. He is just and never wrongs anyone, and the Hereafter will redress every wrong and reward the patient.

Quran

Justice and mercy

Much evil results from human choices, and natural calamities are a test and a mercy through the patience, solidarity and repentance they bring, and the believer is rewarded for what befalls him. Belief in the Hereafter is essential to understanding the question: Allah’s perfect justice is realised there.

Frequently asked questions

Is suffering a punishment from Allah?

Not necessarily; it may be a test, a raising of rank or an expiation, and no one should judge another as being punished.
