Good table manners
We say bismillah
Before the first bite — and if we forget: bismillah at its beginning and its end (Abu Dawud 3767).
We eat with the right hand
The Prophet ﷺ told the young Umar ibn Abi Salamah: say Allah's name, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is near you (Al-Bukhari 5376).
We eat from what is near us
We eat from the part of the plate nearest to us and do not reach for what is in front of others.
We do not waste
Eat and drink, but do not waste — Allah said so (Al-Araf 7:31).
We thank after eating
Praise be to Allah who fed me this and provided it without any power or strength of my own (At-Tirmidhi 3458).
The manners of salam
We give salam first
The Prophet ﷺ said: the people closest to Allah are those who begin with salam (Abu Dawud 5197).
We spread salam
We greet those we know and those we do not, as the Prophet ﷺ taught us (Al-Bukhari 28).
The complete salam
As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh — thirty rewards (At-Tirmidhi 2689).
We return the salam
Returning the salam is required: we answer with the same or better, Allah said (An-Nisa 4:86).
Salam is a right of the road
Among the rights of the road: lowering the gaze, not harming others, and returning the salam (Al-Bukhari 2465).
