Allah sent Yunus, peace be upon him, to call the people of Nineveh. Yunus left them before seeing the result of his call, and boarded a crowded ship that grew heavy with its passengers.
The crew drew lots to throw one person overboard, and the lot fell on Yunus. He was cast into the sea, and a huge whale swallowed him in the middle of the dark night.
Inside the whale were three darknesses: the sea, the night, and the whales belly. Yunus made his great call: There is no god but You, glory to You — I was among the wrongdoers! Allah heard him — He hears everyone who calls — answered him, and saved him.
Allah brought him out on the shore, weak and ill, and made a gourd tree grow over him with shade and fruit. Then he returned to his people — and the beautiful surprise: a hundred thousand people or more believed in him, and Allah gave them enjoyment for a time.
وَذَا ٱلنُّونِ إِذ ذَّهَبَ مُغَٰضِبٗا فَظَنَّ أَن لَّن نَّقۡدِرَ عَلَيۡهِ فَنَادَىٰ فِي ٱلظُّلُمَٰتِ أَن لَّآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنتَ سُبۡحَٰنَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ
And the man of the fish, when he went away angry and thought We would not constrain him. Then he called out in the darknesses: there is no god but You, glory to You — I was among the wrongdoers.
