Al-Idrisi
Cartographer of kings — 1100–1165 CE / Ceuta & Sicily
Geographer of the Norman court in Palermo, he prepared for King Roger II the Book of Pleasant Journeys into Faraway Lands and drew a world map on a silver plate with coordinate tables for more than 3,700 locations. His maps remained Europe's most accurate for three centuries, and navigators derived from them the idea of connected continents open to the south.
