Ibn Battuta
The widest traveller of the Middle Ages — 1304–1369 CE / Tangier
In 29 years he covered roughly 120,000 km across 44 countries, from Mali to China and from Anatolia to the Maldives, describing the civilisations of three continents in his Rihla (The Journey). Translated into Latin, his book became Europe's first window onto Africa and Asia, and his route is wider than Marco Polo's.
