Al-Biruni

An encyclopaedic mind: he measured the Earth's circumference with his own original method from a mountain peak, giving its radius with a very small error; measured the specific weights of metals with precision rivaling modern laboratories, and predicted buried valleys and sands beneath the earth. In his Verification of India he described Indian civilisation with an ethnographic method that preceded Europe by centuries.
