Ibn al-Shatir
Astronomer of Damascus — 1304–1375 CE
Timekeeper of the Umayyad Mosque, he removed the flawed equant principle from Ptolemy's model and rebuilt the motions of the Sun, Moon and Mercury with coherent circular models. His lunar parameters match Copernicus's almost two centuries later, leading researchers to count him among the tributaries of the Copernican revolution.
