Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi
Painter of the stars — 903–986 CE
Author of The Book of Fixed Stars, the most beautiful illustrated celestial catalogue of the Middle Ages, combining observation with the Arabic star names (Aldebaran, Algol, Fomalhaut) that entered European languages through his translation. He also recorded the first clear written description of the Andromeda cloud next to our galaxy.
