In Al-Risala he produced the first independent science of legal principles: ordering the evidences from the Qur'an and Sunnah to consensus and analogy. He combined Hijazi and Iraqi approaches into a middle way spread through Egypt, the Levant, East Africa and South Asia, famed for his courtesy in debate.
