Al-Jahiz

Encyclopaedist of The Book of Animals, describing some 350 species and discussing the food chain and animals' adaptation to environment — the kernel of what would later be called natural selection — and of Al-Bayan wa-l-Tabyin, which founded literary criticism. He united science, wit and social philosophy in his pen.
