What is the ruling on leaving Islam (apostasy)?

Short answerScholars differ on this. The Quran affirms freedom of belief and names no worldly penalty for leaving Islam, while a hadith says, “Whoever changes his religion, kill him.” Some limit it to treason and rebellion against the community in wartime; others held a penalty for open apostasy. No one may be forced into Islam.

What the Quran says

Quran

There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion. The right course has become distinct from the wrong. So whoever disbelieves in ṭāghūt and believes in Allāh has grasped the most trustworthy handhold with no break in it. And Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.

Al-Baqarah 2:256
Quran

And say, "The truth is from your Lord, so whoever wills - let him believe; and whoever wills - let him disbelieve." Indeed, We have prepared for the wrongdoers a fire whose walls will surround them. And if they call for relief, they will be relieved with water like murky oil, which scalds [their] faces. Wretched is the drink, and evil is the resting place.

Al-Kahf 18:29

The hadith and scholars’ views

Hadith

Whoever changes his religion, kill him.

Ibn Abbas · Al-Bukhari

Most classical jurists held a penalty for the one who openly renounces Islam. Others, among them Ibrahim an-Nakha’i, Sufyan ath-Thawri and some contemporary scholars, held that the hadith concerns the traitor who fights the community, not mere change of belief. It is also reported that a Bedouin asked the Prophet ﷺ to release him from his pledge, and he did not kill him. It is a matter of scholarly reasoning, and no individual may apply it on his own; it is for the judiciary.

Frequently asked questions
