كتاب التفسير
Rapporté par Abdullah ibn Mas’ud رضي الله عنه au sujet des paroles d’Allah, le Très-Haut : « Ceux qu’ils invoquent cherchent eux-mêmes les moyens d’accéder à leur Seigneur, pour savoir lequel d’entre eux sera le plus proche » (XVII, 57). Il a expliqué que cela concernait un groupe de djinns qui étaient adorés, puis ils se sont convertis à l’islam, mais ceux qui les adoraient ont continué à les adorer (alors que les djinns étaient devenus musulmans). C’est alors que ce verset a été révélé

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ إِدْرِيسَ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ أَبِي مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، فِي قَوْلِهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ { أُولَئِكَ الَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ يَبْتَغُونَ إِلَى رَبِّهِمُ الْوَسِيلَةَ أَيُّهُمْ أَقْرَبُ} قَالَ كَانَ نَفَرٌ مِنَ الْجِنِّ أَسْلَمُوا وَكَانُوا يُعْبَدُونَ فَبَقِيَ الَّذِينَ كَانُوا يَعْبُدُونَ عَلَى عِبَادَتِهِمْ وَقَدْ أَسْلَمَ النَّفَرُ مِنَ الْجِنِّ .
Traduction anglaise
Abdullah b. Mas'ud reported in connection with the words of Allah, the Exalted and Glorious:" Those to whom they call upon, themselves seek the means or access to their Lord as to whoever of them becomes nearest" (xvii. 57) that it related to a party of Jinn who were being worshipped and they embraced Islam but those who worshipped them kept on worshipping them (though the Jinn whom the misguided people worshipped had become Muslims). It was then that this verse was revealed

عبداللہ بن ادریس نے اعمش سے ، انھوں نے ابراہیم سے ، انھوں نے ابو معمر سے اور انھوں نے حضرت عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے اللہ عزوجل کے اس فرمان کے متعلق روایت کی : " وہ لوگ جنھیں یہ ( کافر ) پکارتے ہیں وہ خود اپنے رب کی طرف وسیلہ تلاش کرتے ہیں کہ ان میں سے کو ن زیادہ نزدیک ہوگا ۔ " ( ابن مسعود رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے ) کہا : جنوں کی ایک جماعت مسلمان ہوگئی تھی اور ( اس سے پہلے ) ان کی پوجاکی جاتی تھی ، تو جو ان کی عبادت کیاکرتے تھے ، ان کی عبادت پرقائم رہے جبکہ جنوں کی یہ جماعت خود اسلام لے آئی ۔
