Our methodology and sources

Discover Islam uses Quran text and translations published through QuranEnc, well-known hadith collections with a source on every text, and openly stated astronomical methods for prayer times. Religious content is still pending scholarly review and nothing on this site is marked as reviewed.

The Quran and its translations

  • Arabic text: the Uthmani script from QuranEnc, shown unedited.
  • Translations: Saheeh International (English), Rashid (French), Garcia (Spanish), Bubenheim (German), Suliman (Chinese) and Rowwad (Russian), all via QuranEnc, with the source shown on the page.
  • Full verses in adhkar and articles are pulled from the mushaf data, not typed by hand.

Hadith and adhkar

Each hadith or dhikr carries its source and number where available. Where the grading is disputed we say so, and we do not publish a text without a source.

Prayer times and qibla

  • Times are calculated astronomically from the city’s coordinates: the Egyptian authority for Egypt, Umm al-Qura for Saudi Arabia, Muslim World League by default, ISNA for North America and Karachi (University of Islamic Sciences) for Pakistan, India and Bangladesh.
  • Qibla is the great-circle bearing from the city to the Kaaba, measured from true north rather than magnetic north.
  • Imsak is ten minutes before Fajr as a precaution. The Ramadan and Eid dates shown are expected by the Umm al-Qura calendar and are confirmed by moon sighting or your country’s official announcement.
  • City coordinates come from GeoNames and Wikidata; mosque maps use OpenStreetMap data (ODbL).

A nearby mosque may differ by a few minutes; when in doubt, follow the official authority in your country.

Review and corrections

  • All religious content and translations await review by an Azhar scholar, and we do not label any page as reviewed until that has actually happened.
  • Several languages (French, Spanish, Chinese, German, Russian) are machine-quality translations of the interface and articles and need native-speaker review.
  • On disputed questions we present the positions of the schools and do not issue fatwas. For your own situation, ask a scholar or a trusted Islamic centre.
  • If you find a mistake, tell us through the contact page and we will correct it.

Ads and privacy

We never place ads inside or between Quran or adhkar text, and advertising does not shape what we write. We use Google Analytics to measure traffic; see the privacy page for details.
