Islamic wedding guide: planning a halal wedding

An Islamic wedding combines the nikah, public announcement and the walima feast. The Sunnah is ease and moderation: announce the marriage, a permissible duff is encouraged, and the feast should match your means, avoiding what is forbidden and wasteful.

Planning steps

  1. Set a budget

Use our wedding budget planner to split venue, food, photography and clothing.

  2. Agree mahr and contract

See the mahr and civil registration guides.

  3. Choose venue and date

The nikah may take place at a mosque or Islamic centre.

  4. Plan halal catering

Make sure the food is halal and avoid excess and show.

  5. Photography and clothing

Choose what keeps modesty; scholars differ on details of photography, so ask.

  6. Walima

Host a walima after the nikah, even a modest one (Bukhari, Muslim).

Quran

Surah Al-A‘raf 7:31
