Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque
Muscat, Oman

Oman's modern masterpiece: a hand-woven carpet among the largest in the world, made in Iran by some 600 artisans, a Swarovski crystal chandelier among the biggest ever made, stone minarets and a white-marble courtyard in Omani patterns.
Story & history
Sultan Qaboos ordered it as a beacon of Omani learning and art: craftsmen vied over the prayer carpet woven over four years, the dome hung with an immense crystal chandelier, and the site was landscaped with gardens and ornamental pools. Opened on the 30th anniversary of the Sultan's accession, it became one of the Gulf's most famous mosques worldwide.
