Imam Reza Shrine
Mashhad, Iran

The largest mosque and shrine complex in the world by area: a soaring golden dome, vast courtyards, seminaries and a great library, over the grave of Imam Ali ibn Musa al-Reza, visited by millions each year.
Story & history
Imam al-Reza was buried at Tus in 203 AH and his grave became the nucleus of the shrine; sultans expanded it century after century until it became a complete religious city of domes, courtyards, minarets, water-offering halls and law schools. Shah Abbas I added the gilded ornament and tilework, and Qajar rulers renewed the turquoise-domed mausoleum — travellers ranked it among Islam's greatest Eastern monuments.
