Is Allah the same God as in Christianity and Judaism?

Short answer“Allah” is simply the Arabic word for the one God, and Arabic-speaking Christians use it too in their Bibles and prayers. Muslims believe the God of Abraham, Moses and Jesus is the God they worship, while differing with Judaism and Christianity about aspects of His nature, such as the Trinity and the sonship of Jesus, which are real points of theological disagreement.

The word “Allah”

“Allah” is not a name of a separate deity: it is the Arabic word for God, used by Arabic-speaking Christians and Jews. For Muslims it means the One Creator with no partner, summarised in Surat Al-Ikhlas:

Quran

Al-Ikhlas 112:1–4

Common ground

The Quran calls for courteous dialogue with Christians and Jews and affirms what we share: one God.

Quran

Al-Ankabut 29:46

Where the disagreement lies

  • The Trinity: Muslims hold that God is absolutely one and do not accept the Trinity.
  • The sonship of Jesus: Muslims do not believe Jesus is God’s son; he is a prophet and messenger.
  • Respect: Muslims believe in Moses, Jesus and their scriptures, and worship God alone.
