Muwatta Malik
Imam Malik ibn Anas · 711 – 795 CE · 1,866
The oldest hadith compilation that reached us intact. Malik gathered what he found reliable from the people of Madinah: reports, verdicts and practice. Ash-Shafi'i said: no book on earth is more authentic than Malik's book.
Selection method
It blends prophetic reports with the verdicts of the Companions and the practiced tradition of Madinah — a living record of the first Muslim community.
Samples from the book
إنما الأعمال بالنيات وإنما لكل امرئ ما نوى
Meaning: Among what it records too: acceptance of deeds rests on the sincerity of their intention.
