Sunnahs of Eid
كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ لَا يَغْدُو يَوْمَ الْفِطْرِ حَتَّى يَأْكُلَ تَمَرَاتٍThe Prophet ﷺ would not go out on the day of Eid al-Fitr until he had eaten some dates.
- Bathing, wearing fragrance and one’s best clothes.
- Going to the prayer place by one route and returning by another. (Al-Bukhari 986)
- Greeting: “Taqabbalallahu minna wa minkum” (may God accept from us and from you).
Zakat al-Fitr
فَرَضَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ زَكَاةَ الْفِطْرِ صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ شَعِيرٍ ... وَأَمَرَ بِهَا أَنْ تُؤَدَّى قَبْلَ خُرُوجِ النَّاسِ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِThe Messenger of God ﷺ made zakat al-fitr obligatory: a sa‘ of dates or a sa‘ of barley ... and commanded that it be paid before people go out to the prayer.

The Eid prayer
- Two rak‘ahs without adhan or iqamah, prayed after the sun has risen to about a spear’s height.
- Additional takbirs in both rak‘ahs according to the majority (seven and five among the Shafi‘is and Hanbalis; three in each among the Hanafis); follow your local imam.
- The sermon follows the prayer, and women and children are encouraged to attend.
The takbir
The takbir is said from sunset on the last day of Ramadan until the Eid prayer:
اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، وَلِلَّهِ الْحَمْدُGod is the Greatest, God is the Greatest; there is no god but God; God is the Greatest, God is the Greatest, and to God belongs all praise.
