Al-Zaytuna Mosque
Medina of Tunis, Tunisia

The second great mosque of old Africa after Kairouan and the scholarly heart of Tunis for centuries; graduates of its madrasa led law and letters across the Maghreb, and the covered souks of the old city surround it.
Story & history
The Aghlabids cared for it after Kairouan, and successive rulers of Tunis made it the second university of North Africa; Ibn Khaldun took his earliest lessons in its study circles while resident in Tunis. From its madrasa came the leaders of modern Zaytuna education, and its courtyard still gathers students of knowledge after every prayer.
