Times are local and approximate; the start of the month is confirmed by moon sighting. Length is from Fajr to Maghrib.
Why do the hours differ?
The fast runs from Fajr to Maghrib, so it follows the length of daylight in your city. Because Ramadan 1448 falls in winter in the northern hemisphere, days are relatively short in London, New York and Toronto, while it falls in summer in Australia, so days are longer there. Ramadan moves about eleven days earlier each year, so this will change.
Moon sighting and the start of the month
Some Western communities rely on local sighting, some on astronomical calculation, and some follow Saudi Arabia or their country of origin. Mosques in the same city can therefore start on different days. Follow your local mosque or council, and don’t let the difference cause conflict.
Tips for fasting where Muslims are a minority
- Tell your manager and colleagues early and ask for flexible hours or a break for prayer and iftar.
- Plan suhoor: protein, fibre and enough water carry you through the day.
- Break your fast with dates and water, pray Maghrib, then eat a moderate meal.
- Find a nearby mosque for taraweeh and community iftars.
- Talk to your doctor if you have a chronic condition or take medication.
