Six days of Shawwal: virtue and how to fast them

Short answerSix days of Shawwal are a sunnah after Ramadan: the Prophet ﷺ said whoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days of Shawwal is as if he fasted the whole year. They may be fasted on any days of the month, consecutive or separate, and it is better to start soon after Eid.

Their virtue

Hadith
مَنْ صَامَ رَمَضَانَ ثُمَّ أَتْبَعَهُ سِتًّا مِنْ شَوَّالٍ كَانَ كَصِيَامِ الدَّهْرِ

Whoever fasts Ramadan and then follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if he fasted for a lifetime.

Muslim 1164

How to fast them

Begin from the second of Shawwal (the first day of Eid is not fasted). Many scholars say whoever owes make-up days from Ramadan should begin with them first.
