Rules of fasting: what breaks the fast and what does not

Short answerFasting means refraining from food, drink and marital relations from dawn until sunset with the intention of worship. The fast is broken by eating or drinking deliberately, intercourse, deliberate vomiting and menstruation, but not by eating forgetfully. The sick and travellers are permitted not to fast, and rulings for pregnant and nursing women differ between schools.

The time and limits of the fast

The fast begins when dawn becomes clear and ends at sunset:

Quran

It has been made permissible for you the night preceding fasting to go to your wives [for sexual relations]. They are a clothing for you and you are a clothing[67] for them. Allāh knows that you used to deceive yourselves,[68] so He accepted your repentance and forgave you. So now, have relations with them and seek that which Allāh has decreed for you [i.e., offspring]. And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night]. Then complete the fast until the night [i.e., sunset]. And do not have relations with them as long as you are staying for worship in the mosques. These are the limits [set by] Allāh, so do not approach them. Thus does Allāh make clear His verses [i.e., ordinances] to the people that they may become righteous.

Al-Baqarah 2:187

What breaks the fast

  • Eating or drinking deliberately.
  • Intercourse during the day of Ramadan, which requires make-up and expiation (kaffarah).
  • Deliberate vomiting (involuntary vomiting does not break it, per the majority).
  • Menstruation and postpartum bleeding: women do not fast and make up the days later.

What does not break the fast

Whoever eats or drinks forgetfully, his fast is valid:

Hadith

If one forgets and eats or drinks, let him complete his fast, for God has fed him and given him drink.

Al-Bukhari 1933, Muslim 1155
  • Using the siwak or brushing teeth without swallowing water.
  • Bathing, cooling oneself and smelling perfume.
  • Contemporary scholars differ on blood tests, eye drops and non-nutritional injections; most hold they do not break the fast, while some are cautious. Ask a trusted scholar about your case.

Who may not fast

The sick and the traveller may break the fast and make up the days later:

Quran

The month of Ramaḍān [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’ān, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the crescent of] the month,[66] let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days. Allāh intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allāh for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.

Al-Baqarah 2:185

Those who cannot fast permanently due to old age or a chronic illness feed a poor person for each day (fidyah):

Quran

[Fasting for] a limited number of days. So whoever among you is ill or on a journey [during them] - then an equal number of other days [are to be made up]. And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] - a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person [each day]. And whoever volunteers good [i.e., excess] - it is better for him. But to fast is best for you, if you only knew.

Al-Baqarah 2:184

Pregnant and nursing women

Hadith

God has lifted fasting from the traveller, and half of the prayer, and fasting from the pregnant or nursing woman.

At-Tirmidhi 715, Abu Dawud 2408

The schools differ: Hanafis say make-up only; Shafi‘is and Hanbalis say make-up plus fidyah if she fears only for her child; Malikis say the pregnant woman makes up while the nursing woman makes up and feeds a poor person. Consult a trusted scholar and your doctor.

Make-up and expiation

  • Make-up (qada): missed days are made up before the next Ramadan.
  • Expiation for deliberate intercourse in a Ramadan day: freeing a slave; if not possible, fasting two consecutive months; if not possible, feeding sixty poor people, along with make-up. (Al-Bukhari 1936, Muslim 1111)
