Why do Muslim women wear the hijab?

Short answerMuslim women who wear the hijab do so out of obedience to God’s command to dress modestly, and as an expression of faith, identity and dignity. The majority of Muslim scholars hold it is obligatory, while a few contemporary voices differ. Islam also insists faith cannot be forced: the measure of belief is the heart, not a garment.

The Quranic basis

God commands believing women to lower their gaze, guard their chastity, not display adornment beyond what is apparent, and to draw their head-coverings over their chests:

Quran

And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision[990] and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment[991] except that which [necessarily] appears thereof[992] and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment [i.e., beauty] except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess [i.e., slaves], or those male attendants having no physical desire,[993] or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allāh in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.

An-Nur 24:31

A second verse

Another verse explains the purpose: that believing women be recognised and protected from harm:

Quran

O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments.[1209] That is more suitable that they will be known[1210] and not be abused. And ever is Allāh Forgiving and Merciful.

Al-Ahzab 33:59

What scholars say

  • The majority of jurists across the four schools: covering the hair and body except the face and hands is obligatory.
  • They differ on covering the face (niqab): some obligatory, some recommended, many permissible.
  • A few contemporary scholars hold the verses establish a principle of modesty without a specific form; this is the minority view.

Choice and dignity

Islam forbids compulsion in religion, and many Muslim women wear the hijab by choice and with pride. Forcing a woman to wear it, or forbidding her from wearing it, are both injustices; each woman answers to her Lord.

Quran

There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion. The right course has become distinct from the wrong. So whoever disbelieves in ṭāghūt[104] and believes in Allāh has grasped the most trustworthy handhold with no break in it. And Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.

Al-Baqarah 2:256

Hijab, niqab and burqa

  • Hijab: a head-and-neck covering with modest clothing.
  • Niqab: a face veil leaving the eyes visible.
  • Burqa (common in Afghanistan): a full-body covering with a mesh over the eyes.

Frequently asked questions

Is it required to wear hijab from the first day of becoming Muslim?

Some new Muslim women adopt it gradually; what matters is sincerity and moving along the path.

Can a Muslim woman work?

Yes; Islam permits women to work, study and own property, and Khadijah, may God be pleased with her, was a merchant.
