What does jihad really mean?

Short answerLinguistically, jihad means striving. In Islam it includes striving against the self to obey God, striving with knowledge, words and wealth, and defensive fighting bound by strict conditions: repelling aggression under legitimate authority, never harming non-combatants. It is not a name for killing innocents, and those who do so contradict Islam’s texts.

The struggle of the self

Hadith

The mujahid is one who strives against his own self in obedience to God.

At-Tirmidhi 1621, Ahmad
Quran

And strive for Allāh with the striving due to Him. He has chosen you and has not placed upon you in the religion any difficulty. [It is] the religion of your father, Abraham. He [i.e., Allāh] named you "Muslims" before [in former scriptures] and in this [revelation] that the Messenger may be a witness over you and you may be witnesses over the people. So establish prayer and give zakāh and hold fast to Allāh. He is your protector; and excellent is the protector, and excellent is the helper.

Al-Hajj 22:78

With knowledge and word

Quran

So do not obey the disbelievers, and strive against them with it [i.e., the Qur’ān] a great striving.

Al-Furqan 25:52
Hadith

The best jihad is a word of justice before an unjust ruler.

Abu Dawud 4344, At-Tirmidhi 2174

Fighting: when and how

Permission to fight was given to defend the wronged who were driven from their homes, and was limited by the ban on transgression:

Quran

Permission [to fight] has been given to those who are being fought,[929] because they were wronged. And indeed, Allāh is competent to give them victory.

Al-Hajj 22:39
Quran

Fight in the way of Allāh those who fight against you but do not transgress. Indeed, Allāh does not like transgressors.

Al-Baqarah 2:190
Hadith

The Messenger of God ﷺ forbade the killing of women and children.

Al-Bukhari 3015, Muslim 1744

When the word is misused

Extremist groups that kill civilians in the name of jihad violate these limits; senior Muslim scholars and institutions have condemned them, and most of their victims are Muslims.

Frequently asked questions

Is jihad a “holy war”?

That is not its definition: jihad is broader than fighting, fighting has conditions and ethics, and “holy war” is a Western phrase that does not match the meaning.
