His miraculous birth
The Quran says angels gave Mary glad tidings of a son who would be a word from God, and his birth was a sign: God created him without a father, just as He created Adam without a father or mother. Mary holds a very high place in Islam, and a whole chapter of the Quran bears her name.
[And mention] when the angels said, "O Mary, indeed Allāh gives you good tidings of a word[125] from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary - distinguished in this world and the Hereafter and among those brought near [to Allāh]. He will speak to the people in the cradle and in maturity and will be of the righteous." She said, "My Lord, how will I have a child when no man has touched me?" [The angel] said, "Such is Allāh; He creates what He wills. When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, 'Be,' and it is.
He spoke as an infant
When her people questioned Mary, she pointed to the baby, and Jesus spoke in the cradle, declaring that he is a servant of God:
So she pointed to him. They said, "How can we speak to one who is in the cradle a child?" [Jesus] said, "Indeed, I am the servant of Allāh. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet. And He has made me blessed wherever I am and has enjoined upon me prayer and zakāh as long as I remain alive And [made me] dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me a wretched tyrant. And peace is on me the day I was born and the day I will die and the day I am raised alive."
His miracles
The Quran lists miracles God granted Jesus, including healing the blind and the leper and giving life to the dead. Each time it stresses that this was “by God’s permission”: the miracle is God’s act, supporting His messenger, not a power Jesus held on his own.
And [make him] a messenger to the Children of Israel, [who will say], 'Indeed I have come to you with a sign from your Lord in that I design for you from clay [that which is] like the form of a bird, then I breathe into it and it becomes a bird by permission of Allāh. And I cure the blind [from birth] and the leper, and I give life to the dead - by permission of Allāh. And I inform you of what you eat and what you store in your houses. Indeed in that is a sign for you, if you are believers.
Why Muslims do not believe he is God or the Son of God
The core Muslim belief is that God is One, with no partner and no offspring (tawhid). The Quran presents the Messiah as a human messenger who ate food and prayed to God, honoured but not divine:
The Messiah, son of Mary, was not but a messenger; [other] messengers have passed on before him. And his mother was a supporter of truth. They both used to eat food.[277] Look how We make clear to them the signs; then look how they are deluded.
The Quran addresses Christians with respect, calling them to a common word, without any insult to Jesus or Mary:
O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion[236] or say about Allāh except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allāh and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him. So believe in Allāh and His messengers. And do not say, "Three"; desist - it is better for you. Indeed, Allāh is but one God. Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allāh as Disposer of affairs.
Was Jesus crucified in Islam?
The Quran says God raised him to Himself, and that they neither killed nor crucified him, but it was “made to appear so to them.” Most Muslims understand this to mean God saved Jesus and raised him up. Commentators differ on the details of how it appeared, but agree on the core: God saved and raised him.
And [for] their saying, "Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus the son of Mary, the messenger of Allāh." And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain. Rather, Allāh raised him to Himself. And ever is Allāh Exalted in Might and Wise.
Jesus in the Prophet’s teaching
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ made belief in Jesus as a servant and messenger part of the faith that leads to Paradise, and he said he is closest to Jesus among people:
Whoever testifies that there is no god but God alone, without partner, that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, that Jesus is God’s servant and messenger, His word which He bestowed on Mary and a spirit from Him, and that Paradise is true and Hell is true, God will admit him to Paradise whatever his deeds.
I am the closest of people to Jesus son of Mary, and the prophets are paternal brothers; there is no prophet between him and me.
His return near the end of time
The two Sahih collections report that Jesus will return before the Last Hour as a just ruler, following the law of Muhammad ﷺ rather than bringing a new one:
By Him in whose hand is my soul, the son of Mary will soon descend among you as a just judge.
Where Islam and Christianity meet and part
- They agree on his miraculous birth from the Virgin Mary, on his miracles, and on his exalted status.
- They differ on his divinity and sonship, and on crucifixion and atonement: Islam holds that God is One and each person is accountable for their own deeds.
- Respect is required: a Muslim’s faith is not complete without believing in Jesus and all the prophets without distinction.
