Ashura (10 Muharram): the virtue of fasting it and why

Short answerAshura is the tenth of Muharram, and fasting it together with a day before or after is recommended. The Prophet ﷺ said fasting it expiates the sins of the previous year. It is fasted because God saved Musa and his people from Pharaoh on that day; the Prophet ﷺ fasted it and encouraged fasting it.

صِيَامُ يَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ أَحْتَسِبُ عَلَى اللَّهِ أَنْ يُكَفِّرَ السَّنَةَ الَّتِي قَبْلَهُ

Fasting the day of Ashura, I hope from God that it expiates the year before it.

How to fast it

  • Fast the 9th and 10th, to be distinct from the People of the Book.
  • Or the 10th with the 11th.
  • Fasting only the 10th is also permissible according to the majority.

Does Ashura have another meaning for Muslims?

Yes: among Shia it commemorates the martyrdom of Husayn, may God be pleased with him, with mourning. For Sunnis it is a day of fasting and gratitude for the rescue of Musa.
