The Day of Arafah (9 Dhul-Hijjah): fasting and dua

Short answerThe Day of Arafah is the ninth of Dhul-Hijjah, when pilgrims stand at Arafah; it is the greatest day of Hajj. Non-pilgrims are encouraged to fast it, and the Prophet ﷺ said it expiates the sins of two years. The best supplication on it is “La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah.”

صِيَامُ يَوْمِ عَرَفَةَ أَحْتَسِبُ عَلَى اللَّهِ أَنْ يُكَفِّرَ السَّنَةَ الَّتِي قَبْلَهُ وَالسَّنَةَ الَّتِي بَعْدَهُ

Fasting the day of Arafah, I hope from God that it expiates the year before it and the year after it.

The best dua

Hadith
خَيْرُ الدُّعَاءِ دُعَاءُ يَوْمِ عَرَفَةَ، وَخَيْرُ مَا قُلْتُ أَنَا وَالنَّبِيُّونَ مِنْ قَبْلِي: لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

The best supplication is the supplication on the day of Arafah, and the best of what I and the prophets before me said is: There is no god but God alone, without partner; His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He has power over all things.

Do pilgrims fast on Arafah?

No; the sunnah for the pilgrim at Arafah is not to fast so as to be strong for dua; fasting it is for those not performing Hajj.
