Surah Az-Zalzalah (The Earthquake)

سُورَةُ الزلزلة

بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1. إِذَا زُلۡزِلَتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ زِلۡزَالَهَا ﴿١﴾

   99:1 When the earth is shaken with its [final] earthquake

2. وَأَخۡرَجَتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ أَثۡقَالَهَا ﴿٢﴾

   99:2 And the earth discharges its burdens[1962]

   [1962] See verse 84:4.

3. وَقَالَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مَا لَهَا ﴿٣﴾

   99:3 And man says,[1963] "What is [wrong] with it?" -

   Notes

   [1963] In terror and amazement.

4. يَوۡمَئِذٖ تُحَدِّثُ أَخۡبَارَهَا ﴿٤﴾

   99:4 That Day, it will report its news

5. بِأَنَّ رَبَّكَ أَوۡحَىٰ لَهَا ﴿٥﴾

   99:5 Because your Lord has inspired [i.e., commanded] it.

6. يَوۡمَئِذٖ يَصۡدُرُ ٱلنَّاسُ أَشۡتَاتٗا لِّيُرَوۡاْ أَعۡمَٰلَهُمۡ ﴿٦﴾

   99:6 That Day, the people will depart[1964] separated [into categories] to be shown [the result of] their deeds.

   Notes

   [1964] From the place of Judgement to their final abode. Another interpretation is "emerge separately" (from the graves) .

7. فَمَن يَعۡمَلۡ مِثۡقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيۡرٗا يَرَهُۥ ﴿٧﴾

   99:7 So whoever does an atom's weight[1965] of good will see it,

   Notes

   [1965] Or "the weight of a small ant."

8. وَمَن يَعۡمَلۡ مِثۡقَالَ ذَرَّةٖ شَرّٗا يَرَهُۥ ﴿٨﴾

   99:8 And whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it.
