The Shahada and its pronunciation
Say it with understanding and sincerity, in Arabic if you can and in your own language if you cannot yet.
Ash-hadu an lā ilāha illā-llāh, wa ash-hadu anna Muḥammadan rasūlu-llāh.
I bear witness that there is no god but God and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of God.
What is required and what is not
- Required: conviction in the heart and declaring the Shahada.
- Not required: witnesses, a mosque or an imam. Many new Muslims do it at a mosque for support and documentation, which is encouraged but not a condition.
- Changing your name: not a condition; the name only needs to carry no objectionable meaning, and some people choose an Islamic name by preference.
- Circumcision for men: not a condition for being Muslim. Scholars differ on its ruling (recommended for some, obligatory for others) but it never stops anyone from entering Islam.
No compulsion, no rush
Faith is a free choice, never imposed:
What to do after the Shahada
- Ghusl (a full wash) is recommended by many jurists (and required by some); ask God for steadfastness.
- Learn wudu and prayer, starting with Al-Fatihah and short surahs; God does not burden a soul beyond its capacity.
- Islam wipes out what came before: “Islam erases what preceded it,” a fresh start.
- Connect with good Muslims and learn the rules step by step, without pressure.
Häufige Fragen
Does converting erase my past sins?
Yes: the Prophet ﷺ said, “Islam demolishes what came before it” (Muslim 121). It is a fresh start, God willing.
Do I need Arabic first?
No. Start with what you can, supplicate in your own language, and learn Al-Fatihah and the prayer phrases gradually.
How do I tell my family?
Choose a calm time and show extra kindness and good character, which is your strongest argument. There is no need to rush if you fear a harsh reaction.
